Summary

It has been several years since Shinnosuke traded his former life as a humble peasant to become Fudo, the master of the Dokutsu Dojo。 As the search for his sister continues – the only thing more shocking than what he finds is the truth behind her disappearance。

A fierce sickness known as the crimson plague is spreading throughout the land。 Scouring scouring the towns for evidence of its origin, Fudo comes across a strange amulet described by his sickly mother who believes herself to be the last of the Hiroku Priestesses, sorceresses of the dark forces。But when he bestows this gift upon her to calm her mind, Fudo realizes that her madness was only a façade, and that he may have helped her unleash something that may bring the end of the world he knows it。

Absolutely brutal。 A bloody, revenge plot loaded with supernatural, historic, and religious elements from Edo era Japan。The story really deepens here and we get to know more about the titular mask as well as more about Shinnosuke。 This book looks beyond the first one's focus on Hinin stories of the period。 Delving more into the politics of the samurai and shogunate during the Edo period。 It does a great job of addressing the political issues and infusing them with the supernatural elements from Absolutely brutal。 A bloody, revenge plot loaded with supernatural, historic, and religious elements from Edo era Japan。The story really deepens here and we get to know more about the titular mask as well as more about Shinnosuke。 This book looks beyond the first one's focus on Hinin stories of the period。 Delving more into the politics of the samurai and shogunate during the Edo period。 It does a great job of addressing the political issues and infusing them with the supernatural elements from Shinto and Mikkyo religious practices。The story does not initially treat the supernatural elements as supernatural。 They are treated as superstitious practices that older people participate in。 We see this with Shinnosuke's mother the ailing priestess who cannot heal herself regardless of how many mixtures of teas/potions she takes or rituals she creates。 It is also reflected in the less overtly religious father of Netsuke who has his a hanging weather talisman。 There is a little bit of a fake out with the mask's power as it does appear that the first time Shinnosuke uses it he has the upper hand and the element of surprise。 This is cracked in this book as we see that the mask does have powers and is connected to some unrevealed prophecy。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Je suis de plus en plus intriguée par le mystère de Mimiko 。。。 Où est-elle ? Et pourquoi il attendu autant de temps pour accomplir sa vengeance envers le médecin ?

Not great。 I read volume 1。 The art is good, but the storytelling is a little confused。 It is a twisted tale of revenge, but maybe twists too much and becomes hard to follow。 Volume 2 was marginally better than volume 1, but both struggle from some weak writing。
